MORE INFORMATION ABOUT DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

One thing I highly recommend to dads' lawyers in particular, and all lawyers in general, is to do pro bono representation of battered women -- I mean the truly battered, not the "he forwarded the school's e-mail to me" types.

(1.) This is a good thing to do.

(2.) You get real insight into what is a genuine DV case and what is a faked case by working both sides of the street.

(3.) You gain credibility with the bench.

(4.) In particular, you get to make this argument:

"Your Honor, you and I both know what it's like when a woman is really a victim of domestic violence. She's (insert summary of relevant factual details here, preferably from one of your cases before the same judicial officer). This woman [indicating the Petitioner] is not a victim of domestic violence; (reasons why not, contrasting with the first situation). She's insulting your intelligence . . . and she's insulting all the women who really are victims of domestic violence."

(5.) I often compare a truly battered woman with an old football player (like me) who can point to one old injury after another.

Your DV guys have to make their weeekly meetings or risk jail time, but this can
be a problem for those who have irregular work schedules or travel on business.
Associated has lots of meetings every week and will allow their clients to go to a
meeting (other than their regular group) for good cause shown.
