Cell phone companies can determine where somebody was when he made a cell phone call; they can always tell which "cell" he was in (they use this information for billing) and sometimes they can use GPS to pinpoint the location exactly.
This can be useful to impeach witnesses who lie about where they were when they made a cell phone call.
